Hello.
This is Understanding TikTok – your weekly update. My name is Marcus. I have yet again talked about WarTok (in german). This time at Medientage Mitteldeutschland. Thanks for having me.
Today we talk about:

🧰 Third-Party Tools & Trends
Social media managers & marketers around the globe break down crying in joy. TikTok is extending its Marketing Partner Program. The expansion will allow marketers to manage their TikTok accounts without leaving their third-party content marketing platforms.
The short-form video app is partnering with Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Sprinklr, Emplifi, Dash Hudson, Khoros, Brandwatch and Later for the initial launch.
Marketers will now be able to manage and optimize their content campaigns directly through these third-party platforms. (Techcrunch) Social media management platform Hootsuite has published an entire TikTok Culture Guide.
And there is more. TikTok has launched a new and helpful Trends Discovery tool. You can browse Hashtags, Songs, Creators and TikTok Videos for various countries. Unless you are looking for Last 30 days Hashtags Russia. You can find Russian creators though. But you need to create an account on TikTok Ads.
Here is another tiny little useful tool i found. A Chrome extension that lets you sort videos of TikTok users by the most viewed. It is called Sort for TikTok. It is super helpful and works if you ever need to sort these things.
🇨🇴 Futuro presidente de Colombia
The Republic of Colombia and its 50 million inhabitants will get a new president in a runoff on June 19. Both of them are on TikTok and it is interesting to compare the accounts.
On the one side there is Gustavo Petro, Colombian politician, and economist who is currently serving as a senator. Petro, long forecast to win the first round, won 40.3%. He has 1M Followers and 10.4M Likes on TikTok. Especially in his early videos he appears a bit dull and boring. Attempts to make him more tiktokable by letting him film selfies with a crowd of influencers (7.3 M Views) or showing him eating or getting make-up for a tv appearance work a bit better. But he is not a natural. No Vibe.
It is his opponent 77 year old Rodolfo Hernández Suárez, a Colombian politician, civil engineer and businessman who gets international press coverage. “Colombia’s Trump” (NYT) has been named ‘king of TikTok’ by Reuters. Hernandez, a septuagenarian former mayor of the northern city Bucaramanga, won 28.2% of votes in a first election round, beating establishment favorite Federico Gutierrez for second place in a surprise result. His TikTok numbers 588.4K Follower 4.6M Likes are not as impressive as his performance on the platform. He seems to enjoy it way more than Petro. And so does his team by adding Gonna Fly Now, the Rocky theme to the 77 year old on an electric scooter. Correct me if i am wrong, but he is not actually maneuvering the machine, right?!
📰 The Local Press Tok
A bunch of german local press publication have stepped up their TikTok game, Jonathan Kemper wrote me on Twitter. Amongst them are @generalanzeiger from Bonn (1933 Follower 23.9K Likes), @augsburger_allgemeine (1831 Follower 37.4K Likes), Berlin based @tagesspiegel (351 Follower 2851 Likes), and @hamburgermorgenpost (3154 Follower 30K Likes). While i embrace and applaud all attempts to conquer the platform, here are some impressions i do want to share.
The Morgenpost’s bio is good. A catchy slogan and a personalisation on the account (Sahra & Sahra). Obviously they will guide me through the content. Good. Not so sure about posting a review of each calendar week at the end of the week. The mobile screen backdrop does not really add value. Most viewed video: 8 random facts über Hamburg.
Tagesspiegel (“The leading medium from the capital”) does not yet know what to do with the account. Especially the lack of personalisation makes it hard to follow some of the videos. The overproduced Ukraine Updates do not fit in on TikTok especially when compared to the endless amounts of eye witness footage #WarTok.
I do like the dry sound of the bio for Bonner Generalanzeiger (“This is the account of the Bonner General-Anzeiger”). The most viewed video is an explainer. The voicers sometimes feel misplaced on the app. Instead of mimicking television the reporters could and should try to forget all the professional seriousness and become a bit more real. Especially when covering music festivals.
Yet again a personalised account at Augbsurger Allgenmeine. Manu & Joni explain news. The most viewed video is yet again an explainer (about the infamous german 9 Euro ticket). Obviously this topic is a natural fit for media and there seems to be interest on the audience side. Special mention for the very active and good comments section ⭐.
Of course these are just first quick observations. Happy to see the channels evolve.
Is your local or regional german paper on TikTok. Please comment or write a quick mail. I gather german media companies here.
